How to Travel from Tbilisi Airport to Gudauri Ski Resort in 2027
The ski season is approaching, and many of you are already starting to plan your winter holidays in Georgia. Gudauri is one of the country’s most popular ski resorts, attracting visitors from around the world.
In this blog post, I’ll explain how to travel from Tbilisi International Airport to Gudauri and share some practical advice from my experience as a local tour guide. These tips are based on questions my tourists frequently ask me and will hopefully help you make your journey easier and more enjoyable.
1. Exchanging Money at Tbilisi Airport
Let’s start with your arrival.
After collecting your luggage, follow the signs to the arrivals hall. Once you exit into the public arrivals area, you’ll find several services available.

Many visitors need to exchange money, especially if they plan to travel directly to Gudauri. Generally, airport exchange offices are not the best places to exchange money, as their rates can be less favourable than those in the city.
However, sometimes you have no choice but to exchange money at the airport. If that’s the case, it’s worth knowing which exchange office offers a competitive rate.
One option to check is Intel Express. It sometimes offers rates comparable to those in the city, although rates can change. You may even find a queue in front of its exchange office.
My advice is to compare the displayed rates before exchanging your money and avoid exchanging large amounts unless necessary.
2. Buying a SIM Card at the Airport
Another confusing issue for visitors is choosing a SIM card. There are several options available, and it isn’t always easy to decide which one is best.

Some companies even advertise free SIM cards, but remember that the SIM card itself is often free. You usually pay for mobile internet, calls, or other services.
Two of Georgia’s major mobile operators are Magti and Silknet. Both have offered services at Tbilisi International Airport, where you can buy a SIM card and choose a package that suits your needs. Check their current opening hours and offers before travelling.
As a general guide, a mobile package with unlimited internet may cost around 35 GEL per month, although prices and conditions can change. This can be a convenient option for tourists who need internet access for navigation, communication, and sharing photos during their stay.
Before buying a package, check whether it really offers unlimited data and whether any speed restrictions apply.
3. Avoid Unofficial Taxi Offers
My next recommendation is to be careful when choosing transport from the airport.
You may encounter drivers inside the terminal or near the exit offering to take you to Gudauri. I recommend avoiding unverified offers, as some drivers may charge excessively high prices.
Instead, arrange your transfer in advance or use a reputable transport service. This way, you’ll know the price before starting your journey and can avoid unnecessary stress.
The drive from Tbilisi International Airport to Gudauri usually takes around 2–3 hours in normal conditions. However, winter weather, heavy snowfall, traffic, and icy roads can make the journey considerably longer.
Make sure your driver has experience driving in winter mountain conditions and that the vehicle is properly equipped for the weather.
4. Don’t Miss the Sights Along the Way
If you arrive during the daytime, I recommend making a few stops along the way, provided you have enough time and the weather conditions are suitable.
The road from Tbilisi to Gudauri follows the Georgian Military Highway, which offers some beautiful scenery and interesting historical sites.
Jinvali Reservoir

Jinvali Reservoir is one of the most picturesque places along the route. Surrounded by mountains, its water can display beautiful shades of turquoise, making it an excellent place to stop for photographs.
Ananuri Fortress

Located beside Jinvali Reservoir, Ananuri Fortress is one of the most impressive historical sites along the Georgian Military Highway. Its churches, defensive towers, and scenic location make it well worth a visit.
In my opinion, these stops are worth the extra time and expense. Instead of simply travelling from the airport to your hotel, you can start discovering Georgia’s history and scenery as soon as you arrive.
However, keep the season in mind. Winter days are short, and road conditions can change quickly. If you arrive late in the afternoon or the weather is bad, it may be better to travel directly to Gudauri.
5. Where to Stay in Gudauri
If you’re visiting Gudauri primarily for skiing, I recommend considering the New Gudauri area.
One of its main advantages is its proximity to the ski lifts. Many apartments and accommodation options are located close to the lifts, allowing you to reach the slopes without needing a car every morning.
This can be especially convenient for families and travellers who want to spend most of their time skiing.
However, not every apartment is directly beside a ski lift, so check the exact location before booking. During the winter season, accommodation in popular locations can fill up quickly, so it’s worth making your reservation in advance.
Final Advice
Travelling from Tbilisi Airport to Gudauri is relatively straightforward if you plan ahead. Arrange reliable transport, check your mobile internet options, exchange money carefully, and allow extra time for winter road conditions.
If you arrive during the daytime, consider stopping at Jinvali Reservoir and Ananuri Fortress along the way. These places offer a wonderful introduction to Georgia before you reach the mountains.
And one final tip from a local tour guide: don’t underestimate the winter weather. A journey that takes two hours in good conditions can take much longer when it snows.
Enjoy your trip, and have a wonderful ski holiday in Georgia!
