What to Know When Visiting Gergeti Trinity Church

Gergeti Trinity Church is one of the most popular attractions in Georgia. It is easy to find information about the church online: it dates from the 14th century, stands at around 2,200 meters above sea level, and since 2002 has functioned as a monastery.

Even if you are not particularly interested in the history of the church, the location alone is impressive. The view from the church towards Stepantsminda is spectacular, and the surrounding mountains make the experience even more memorable. If the weather is clear, look to the left as you face the entrance and you may see Mount Kazbek rising behind the valley. When the clouds are not covering its summit, the view can be truly remarkable.

I personally visit Gergeti Trinity Church very often. As a tour guide, I usually come here at least twice a month during the tourist season. Over the years, I have noticed that some travelers become a little confused after walking around the church.

They have already taken photos of the beautiful views from every side, but then they wonder: What else should I look at?

So, in this article, I want to point out several details that are easy to miss. I will focus on things you can actually see at the site and avoid popular legends or claims that are difficult to prove.

Look at the carvings before entering the church

Before you enter the church, take a closer look at the walls around the bell tower.

On the left-hand side, you can see carvings of two unusual animal-like figures. They have sometimes been compared to dinosaurs because of their appearance.

But did people in medieval Georgia know what dinosaurs looked like?

No one can say that with certainty. There is no reason to present these figures as evidence that medieval Georgians knew about dinosaurs. Their exact meaning and identification remain uncertain, which is precisely what makes them interesting.

Nearby, you can also see a small human figure traditionally associated with a shepherd and the construction of the church.

These details are easy to overlook because most visitors are understandably focused on the spectacular mountain scenery.

Look carefully at the fresco inside

Once you enter the church, look towards the left side of the interior wall, near the iconostasis (kankeli).

There is a medieval fresco depicting Jesus that is particularly interesting because it was rediscovered during restoration work in the 2000s.

For many years, the original medieval paintings were hidden beneath later layers of paint. Some of these later paintings date from the period of the Russian Empire, when Georgia was part of the empire.

The discovery and restoration of the older painting give visitors a chance to see not only medieval Georgian religious art, but also evidence of how the interior of the church changed over the centuries.

The small building beside the church

Another structure that many visitors mistake for part of the church is the small building or shelter next to it.

According to local tradition and historical accounts, this was connected with the traditional community administration of Gergeti.

Important decisions concerning the village were discussed by respected community members there. In the traditional mountain communities of Georgia, such gatherings played an important role in local life.

It is a good reminder that Gergeti Trinity Church was not simply an isolated religious building on a mountain. It was part of the social and cultural life of the surrounding community.

One of Georgia’s highest churches

The location itself is one of the most remarkable things about Gergeti Trinity Church.

At roughly 2,200 meters above sea level, it is among the highest and most dramatically located churches in Georgia. The combination of medieval architecture, the surrounding mountains, Stepantsminda below, and Mount Kazbek nearby explains why it has become such an iconic image of Georgia.

Gergeti today

Since 2002, Gergeti Trinity Church has functioned as a monastery. Monks live and worship here, so visitors should remember that this is not simply a historical monument or tourist viewpoint.

When you visit, take some time to walk around the church, observe the details of the stonework and paintings, and appreciate the landscape—but also respect the religious character of the place.

For me, Gergeti is one of those places where the landscape can easily distract you from the history.

Take your photographs, enjoy the view, look at Mount Kazbek—but before you leave, spend a few extra minutes looking at the details of the church itself.

They are easy to miss.
