Best Itinerary for a Day Trip to Sighnaghi
Sighnaghi is probably one of the two most popular day-trip destinations from Tbilisi, and there are several reasons why visitors love it. One of them is its location: it takes only about 1.5 hours to reach Sighnaghi from Tbilisi.
Although there is plenty of information available online about this destination, as a local tour guide, I would like to share some tips to help you make the most of your trip without missing anything interesting.
I would include all the activities and places worth considering for a one-day tour. You can then choose whichever options interest you most.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Sighnaghi?
My recommendation as a local tour guide is to start from Tbilisi at around 9 a.m.
Sighnaghi is worth visiting in all four seasons, but in my opinion, late May and early June are the best times. During this period, you can see the snow-capped Caucasus Mountains against the fresh green landscape of the Alazani Valley. This combination creates some of the most beautiful scenery in the region.
Before planning your trip, however, I strongly recommend checking the weather forecast using a reliable weather app.
If the forecast predicts sunny weather, that is ideal. Slightly cloudy weather can also be fine, but if rain is expected, I would suggest changing your plans and choosing another destination. Sighnaghi is known for its heavy fog, and if the valley and mountains are hidden from view, you could miss some of the most beautiful scenery.
If the weather looks good, you are ready to go!
First Stop: KTW Wine Factory

One possible first stop on the way to Sighnaghi is the KTW wine factory, where visitors may be able to enjoy a wine tasting.
As it is a large wine producer, its wines are not necessarily representative of traditional Georgian qvevri winemaking. For wine professionals looking for traditional winemaking methods, this might not be the most interesting stop. However, for beginners who would like to learn more about Georgian wine and taste different varieties, it can be a good experience.
You can try several wines, including sweet varieties, and spend around 40 minutes there.
Second Stop: Badiauri Village

Another excellent stop is the village of Badiauri, approximately 30 minutes farther along the road from the winery.
Here, local people sell fresh cheese and traditional Georgian bread baked in a clay oven called a tone.
You can even take part in the bread-making process. I highly recommend buying freshly baked bread, local cheese, and tomatoes and enjoying a small Georgian-style feast right there.
It is a simple experience, but one that my guests really love. Even if you skip breakfast before leaving Tbilisi, fresh bread, cheese, and tomatoes make a delicious and satisfying meal.
And the best part? It is very affordable. You can expect to spend around $5 for four people, depending on the prices at the time of your visit.
Third Stop: Bodbe Monastery
After Badiauri, continue towards Bodbe Monastery.

Before reaching the monastery, make a short stop near Bodbe Hotel, where you can take photographs of the Caucasus Mountains and the Alazani Valley. Spend around 10 minutes enjoying the view before continuing to the monastery.
Bodbe Monastery is a beautiful religious complex surrounded by a well-maintained garden. It is one of the most important places to visit in the Sighnaghi area.
I will not go into its history here, as this article is about planning your itinerary rather than exploring the history of each attraction. Your tour guide can tell you more about the monastery during your visit.
Allow around one hour for Bodbe Monastery and its surroundings.
Fourth Stop: Sighnaghi — The City of Love
After visiting Bodbe, drive to Sighnaghi itself.
I recommend exploring the town on foot, starting near Hotel Kabadoni and walking through the charming streets towards the Sighnaghi City Wall.

Sighnaghi is famous for its colourful houses, balconies, cobblestone streets, and beautiful views of the Alazani Valley. Take your time, enjoy the atmosphere, and stop whenever you find a view or architectural detail worth photographing.
Where to Eat in Sighnaghi
You should not leave Sighnaghi without trying Georgian pork barbecue.
For me, Kusika is one of the best places to enjoy it. Pork barbecue is a popular dish in Kakheti, and it is well worth trying while visiting the region.
After lunch, I recommend walking along the Sighnaghi City Wall. It is one of the town’s main attractions and offers beautiful views of the surrounding landscape.
Visit the Pirosmani Museum
Another interesting place to visit, especially for art lovers, is the Pirosmani Museum.
Here, you can see original paintings by Nikoloz Pirosmani, one of Georgia’s most famous painters. The museum provides a good opportunity to learn more about his artistic legacy and appreciate his distinctive style.
If you are interested in Georgian art, I would definitely consider adding this museum to your itinerary.
Why Is Sighnaghi Called the City of Love?
You may also want to take a photograph near the Sighnaghi Wedding House.
The town is widely known as the City of Love because its wedding service is available around the clock, allowing couples to register their marriages at any time, subject to the applicable procedures.
It is a fun stop, particularly for couples, and a popular place for photographs.
An Extra Stop for Wine Lovers: Okro’s Wines

If you are a wine enthusiast or a professional looking for something more specialised, I recommend visiting Okro’s Wines.
This winery and restaurant offers an opportunity to explore Georgian wines in a more distinctive setting. I particularly recommend trying their Busushuri Saperavi, if available.
For visitors who are genuinely interested in wine, this can be a more rewarding experience than simply tasting wines at a large commercial producer.
Keep in mind that fitting in an additional winery visit depends on how much time you spend at the other stops.
Returning to Tbilisi
If you start from Tbilisi at around 9 a.m. and follow this itinerary, you can usually plan to leave Sighnaghi at approximately 5 p.m. and return to Tbilisi at around 6:30 p.m., depending on traffic and the time spent at each attraction.
Of course, you do not have to visit every place mentioned in this article. Choose the stops that best match your interests, whether they are wine, food, history, art, architecture, or beautiful landscapes.
My advice as a local tour guide is simple: check the weather, avoid rushing, and leave enough time to enjoy the places you visit. Sighnaghi is not just a destination for photographs; it is also a wonderful place to experience the food, wine, and culture of Kakheti.
